The NFL unveiled the full 2026 schedule. As always, plenty of juicy matchups await in the most entertaining of the four major sports leagues. For the Kansas City Chiefs, they are front and center in the spotlight once again. The Chiefs will have one of the higher primetime game totals in 2026.
That leads to some difficult matchups awaiting Kansas City this upcoming season. It is hard to win in the NFL in general. No team truly has a schedule filled with plenty of gimmes. However, there are a handful of games that stand out as the toughest on the Chiefs' 2026 schedule. Here are the top five.
Note: no division games were included due to general importance of those matchups
1. Chiefs @ Los Angeles Rams, Week 13
None of these are listed in any particular order. Yet, the matchup with the Los Angeles Rams immediately jumps out for a multitude of reasons. For one, the Chiefs will be coming off a game against their arch nemesis, the Buffalo Bills, from the week before. It is a second straight week in which Kansas City will play a Thursday night game as well.
This is the point in the calendar that can truly make or break how far some contenders may go. A heightened test against one of the most heavily bet teams to make the Super Bowl comes at a crucial point. Not to mention, the Rams are one of the most star-studded teams in the league. The Chiefs still possess their own stars. Los Angeles provides a solid barometer for younger pieces K.C. expects to count on, though.
2. Chiefs @ Buffalo Bills, Week 12
We know how well the Bills have played against the Chiefs in the regular season. Buffalo has currently won five straight against Kansas City in the regular season. The last time the Chiefs defeated the Bills in the regular season? That took place in the COVID-affected 2020 season in front of no fans in Buffalo.
The timing of some of these games is what can truly make them tougher. The trip to western New York will be the first of three straight weeks on the road for the Chiefs. You cannot go into games against the Bills being lackadaisical. But a massive whiff in showing up for that one could snowball just as the calendar flips to December. Kansas City must avoid that.
Buffalo will host Kansas City under the lights here on Thanksgiving night. It will be the Chiefs' first trip to the Bills' new home stadium.
3. Chiefs @ Seattle Seahawks, Week 7
You cannot really fail to mention the date with the defending Super Bowl champs on this list. The Chiefs and the Seattle Seahawks are each known for having some of the loudest home environments in the league. It is never an easy trip for anyone going to the Pacific Northwest.
This Sunday Night Football matchup will pit the genius defensive mind of Mike MacDonald against the offensive brilliance of Andy Reid. Kansas City arguably may not see as diverse a defense as the Seahawks all season long.
This game also comes a week before the Chiefs go to Denver for a massive division tilt. With that in mind, facing Seattle in this spot offers a solid gut check for Kansas City.
4. Chiefs vs. New England Patriots, Week 15
After Kansas City wraps up those aforementioned three straight road games, they come home to meet the reigning AFC champions. The New England Patriots come to Arrowhead Stadium on Monday Night Football. New England may not always wow you with splash plays. Nonetheless, they can grind things down and drag you into the deep end.
Mike Vrabel always gave the Chiefs tough tests when he was head coach in Tennessee. This date with New England should be no different. To make matters more vital, both teams likely expect to be in playoff races at this stage of the season.
5. Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers, Week 16
Right after hosting the Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers come to Kansas City six days later. The Chiefs have never lost to the 49ers in games started by Patrick Mahomes. Of course, K.C. fans remember two of those outings extremely fondly in a pair of Super Bowl wins.
Even with that dominance, San Francisco is one of the most prepared and disciplined teams in the league. You have to be able to get off on the right foot. Another chance to avoid a slip-up at an important time in the regular season lies ahead when facing the 49ers in December.
