The 2026 NFL regular season schedule is set to be released this week. It is always exciting to see the full slate for individual teams, as well as the list of primetime games. The Kansas City Chiefs will play plenty of top teams this season. With that in mind, no shortage of intriguing storylines worth waiting for.

What are some of the more pressing parts we would like to see from the Chiefs' 2026 schedule? Here are three of the more fascinating elements to watch for.

When is the date with defending champs?

Once the schedule comes out, the Chiefs' matchup against the Seattle Seahawks will be one people should immediately circle. Kansas City will travel to Seattle to take on the defending champion Seahawks. Obviously, those two squaring off is huge in itself.

However, the Chiefs are now in a rare mode of being the hunter rather than the hunted. Coming off a weird and frustrating season, Kansas City looks to get back near the top of the league. The Seahawks are now the ones with a target on their back. In this highly anticipated matchup, how does the pressure mount with each team holding roles they have not been accustomed to?

Plus, the matchup of Mike MacDonald's defense against Andy Reid's offense will be excellent. The Chiefs' newest starting running back, Kenneth Walker III, faces his former team here as well.

What set of opponents do Chiefs receive in first month of season?

How the NFL sets up the Chiefs' early schedule will be fascinating. It is hard to win any given week in this league. Teams will not look at the supposed "lighter" stretches of the schedule the way fans will. Yet, the NFL does a great job of setting up interesting gauntlets at certain points in the season for individual teams.

What does Kansas City's schedule look like for the first month of the season? That item is on the forefront of most minds in Chiefs Kingdom. Patrick Mahomes appears determined to get back for Week 1. If he does indeed return in time, his first opponent has been revealed early. We now know that Kansas City will play Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos in the season opener.

Beyond that, the Chiefs may not get more than a single division game in that first month. Are we going to see the league push more of Kansas City's primetime matchups to a later point in the season? All in all, how the league divvies up their early run could tell us how strong Mahomes is in his recovery.

Chiefs-Bills needs to be back in night slot

The NFL should look to get the Chiefs-Bills matchup back into the nighttime slot. CBS, rightfully so, has likely been quick to protect that matchup as part of their schedule for the last few years. Kansas City and Buffalo, of course, draw massive ratings when squaring off. This year's meeting may possess a bit of a different flavor after the Chiefs missed the playoffs last year. Mahomes against Josh Allen never does any harm for the television executives, though.

Four consecutive regular-season meetings between the Chiefs and the Bills have come in the afternoon slate. 2021 was the most recent time they played at night in the regular season. Severe weather actually delayed part of that matchup on Sunday Night Football for those who remember.

An added element of this trip to Buffalo is the fact that the Chiefs will see the Bills in a new stadium. With Buffalo opening new stomping grounds, the first chapter between these two in that building will be memorable. That added incentive leads to more of an emphasis on getting these two back in the nightcap under the lights.
