Sonny Styles was just what the Kansas City Chiefs needed, and he hasn't even played a down for them—yet.
It's impossible, at this point, to say whether or not Styles will be suiting up for the Chiefs this fall as the newest member of Steve Spagnuolo's defense. The next several weeks will determine the course of the 2026 NFL Draft, and the intrigue is what makes the event so wildly popular with fans. But even at such an early event like the NFL Combine, Styles is already one of the more important developments for K.C. heading toward the draft.
Styles was the star of the Combine on Thursday with a series of eye-popping performances in one drill after another. His 43.5-inch vertical leap, his 11-foot-2 broad jump, and his 4.46-second 40-yard dash were just some of the metrics measured to prove he's a rare physical specimen even at the highest level of the sport.
Sonny Styles is a LB prospect in the 2026 draft class. He scored an unofficial 9.99 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 4 out of 3216 LB from 1987 to 2026.

Split projected, bench tomorrow. Just good agility drills wasn't enough to hold that 10.00.https://t.co/aKcBrwdovJ pic.twitter.com/KwIRH3MlcD
When you add Styles' tremendous performance to the proven production that wows on film, even against strong competition at Ohio State, you have one of the rare standout prospects in a draft class that's short on truly impactful talent.
Sonny Styles' performance at the 2026 NFL Combine was a gift for the Chiefs, no matter how the draft plays out.
All of this plays right into what the Chiefs needed most. Picking at No. 9 overall in the first round, the Chiefs have a golden opportunity to accelerate a roster retooling by selecting a new blue-chip player to join Patrick Mahomes and company. K.C. has considerable needs on both sides of the ball, but the one thing they need most is to come away with a top-shelf prospect.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs' spot in the draft order often leaves them scratching their heads for the best approach in some mock drafts. Their greatest needs are found along the defensive line, wide receiver, and running back, but it's quite plausible that draft day could see the top rookies from each of those positions taken before they are up. In some cases, it felt like the Chiefs always came up one pick short as names like Jeremiyah Love, Carnell Tate, Rueben Bain Jr., and Makai Lemon were taken earlier.
That's what makes Styles' Combine effort so pivotal. In one afternoon in Indianapolis, Styles changed the conversation. It's now very hard to imagine any team letting such a rare specimen like Styles drop all the way to No. 9 in the draft order, which means other prospects at needed positions should fall a bit farther to the Chiefs.
When picking in the top 10, that's a very important factor. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach even stated this during his press conference earlier at the NFL Combine when he said, "It’s funny, every year when we were picking 31 and 32, I’d always say, ‘Man, if we were just at (pick) 24 or 25, we’d be exactly where we want to be.’ Now, we’re at nine, and I’m like, ‘Man, if we were just at (pick) four (or) five, we’d be exactly where we want to be."
But even if the most talented entrants at the Chiefs' greatest positions of need are somehow all gone by the time Veach is on the clock, Styles now looks like a potential fall-into-their-laps gift from the draft gods. The linebacker position isn't bleeding, but the addition of one of the single best defenders available would still alter things significantly on that side of the ball. At a position where Leo Chenal could leave in free agency and Drue Tranquill is older and in a contract year, the need is perhaps even greater than most fans realize.
The bottom line is that whether the Chiefs draft Styles themselves or he reshapes the draft order ahead of them, his performance at the Combine was a gift for Kansas City. The outlook is a bit brighter knowing the draft class is a bit stronger. That's a serious boost for a team that won only six games last season.
