The Kansas City Chiefs are wrapping up the last day of their mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. This will be the last time the team is together before returning for training camp in July. Head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Wednesday and provided several updates.
He was asked about receiver Rashee Rice's rehab process. And considering everything that has happened, things look optimistic on that front.
"So, Rick [Burkholder] has talked to him more than I have. Just making sure that everything was set there where he could do some rehab with it and still do the time that he needed to take care of. So he’s on top of that. Thank goodness that they’re allowing him to do it. They’ve been great with that."
Reid was then asked if Rice would be ready for training camp, and things sounded encouraging there as well.
"I think he will be. He gets out [of jail] next week. We'll see where it goes. He'll be back up here and working."
Rice's offseason has been disappointing to say the least, but with his sentence set to end soon, the Chiefs expect him to be ready in a month, and that's better than what anyone thought several weeks ago.
Andy Reid's update on Rashee Rice was positive
Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail for testing positive for marijuana after he violated his probation for his role in the Dallas crash two years ago. That cost him both OTAs and minicamp, which is less than ideal. In particular, because he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery right before he had to go to jail.
Despite being locked up, it sounds like Rice has been given the ability to rehab without much of a problem. They could have easily made things worse on that front, but it doesn't appear that was the case.
Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder is in communication with Rice and is likely giving him a plan to follow. He's also providing Reid with updates, and from the sound of things, it's positive.
Rice's scheduled release date is June 16, which should give him another month to continue rehabbing before training camp starts. He will certainly need time to get back into football shape, and Kansas City may take things slow with him, but getting on the field when camp starts would be major.
It would give Rice time to get back into football while getting valuable reps that he missed over the spring. Despite everything that has transpired, Rice is Kansas City's No. 1 receiver, and if they want to return to the postseason in 2026, they will need him at his best. Especially Patrick Mahomes.
The fact that his rehab is going well and he's expected to be on the field for camp is a win for the Chiefs. And with how the last few weeks have played out for Rice, fans will take the positive update.
