The Kansas City Chiefs know how important Patrick Mahomes is to this organization, and they have wasted no time making sure he's happy. Kansas City decided to rework Mahomes' contract by adding two years to his contract, extending his contract through 2033.
The new money on his contract is $239.05 million, with the total value now at $504.75 million. Mahomes can make up to $522.25 million through incentives, and in 2027, his average annual salary will be $64 million per year, setting an NFL record.
Everyone is pumped to keep this relationship going forward and the statements from Mahomes, Brett Veach and Andy Reid all display that.
Chiefs can't hold back excitement around Mahomes' future with Kansas City
"This is a huge day for the Chiefs, Patrick, and really all of Chiefs kingdom... This is a landmark deal for a once-in-a-lifetime player. Patrick has grown into one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play the game, and to add to that, he's changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise's history," Veach wrote via Chiefs' official X account.
Then Mahomes recorded a video for Chiefs Kingdom and didn't refrain from expressing his gratitude for the future.
"What's up Chiefs Kingdom. I'm just so excited to be here for life and to be apart of Chiefs Kingdom for even longer. We have so much more to do. Let's go out and do it. Let's go win some more."
And of course, Reid had to talk about his franchise quarterback and heaped praise when speaking to reporters on Thursday.
"I think it’s great. Listen, he’s done a great job as a professional and then off the field as a father and husband, and so you’ve got the whole package there. You guys have had a chance to watch him grow over the years in both of those areas, and so, he’s a great representative of the organization and a heckuva football player."
There's no downplaying the importance of Mahomes in KC. Over his nine years as a starter, the Chiefs didn't make the playoffs once and that came last year when he tore his ACL. When he's on the field, Mahomes has shown time and time again that he's a certified winner and will do it on the biggest stages.
In his career, Mahomes is 17-4 in the playoffs, with five Super Bowl appearances. He's 3-2 in the SB, as the Chiefs became a regular in that game, playing in all five Super Bowls since 2020. No matter who lined up on the other side, Mahomes has found a way to win.
Teams in the AFC haven't been able to get over the hump that is Mahomes. He puts fear in the opposition and whenever he's on the field, the Chiefs have a chance to win. That's why they have no problem giving Mahomes a record deal, making him the first player to get a deal over $500 million in NFL history.
During the regular season (126 games), Mahomes has tossed 35,939 yards with 267 passing touchdowns. Then in the postseason, he has added another 5,814 passing yards and 46 touchdowns in 21 outings.
When the lights are bright, you can expect Mahomes to deliever and with this deal, the Chiefs made it clear they want him around for his whole career. The feeling is mutual and that should make every Chiefs fan excited for what's still to come.
