Record-setting contracts are given to record-setting players, and it's no surprise that the Kansas City Chiefs' financial commitment to Patrick Mahomes has turned heads from the beginning. General manager Brett Veach has taken the next step in the team's relationship by extending Mahomes for another two seasons.
According to Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have locked up Mahomes for another two years—which extends what was already an incredibly lengthy extension at 10 years—through the 2033 season. Some of the details of the deal have not yet been made public, but the initial announcement brought the sum of his extension to a reported $504.75M, which means Mahomes can lay claim to another record as the first half-billion-dollar contract in the NFL.
The timing might be odd considering that Mahomes is coming off of an injury-shortened season and is in the midst of rehabilitation for a torn ACL and LCL, but the rules are different when dealing with a generational talent. Mahomes is by far the single greatest player to ever wear a Chiefs' uniform, and no one in K.C. has any doubt about his ability to remain an elite franchise quarterback for the life of the deal.
The Chiefs do the right thing by making sure Patrick Mahomes is never leaving the organization.
Since taking over as the Chiefs' starter in 2018, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships and five appearances in the NFL's title game. Mahomes has won the MVP in each of those victories, and his supremacy over opposing defenses has single-handedly lifted recognition of the Chiefs' brand on a global level as the defining dynasty of the last decade.
On an individual level, Mahomes is the youngest player ever to win both a league MVP and a Super Bowl title. He reached 200 career touchdown passes in just 84 games, which broke Dan Marino's record as the fastest quarterback in NFL history to hit such a milestone. He's already mentioned in conversations for the greatest QB of all time and he won't turn 31 until September.
Mahomes' first-ever extension was signed back in 2020 and turned heads then as well with a massive 10-year deal worth up to $450 million. At the time, it was the biggest deal in sports history.
The best decision the Chiefs ever made was to draft Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and the second-best is any choice they've ever made to keep him under contract. Veach's latest move is obvious and necessary, and Chiefs Kingdom should be ecstatic to know that the best player in franchise history isn't going anywhere.
