Coming into Week 8, there are some very rare yet interesting non-conference matchups dominating some of the typical primetime spots. Given that they're usually reserved for in-conference contenders matching up or longtime rivalries firing once again, it's kind of nice to actually be taken off guard by the set-up.

This week, the Chicago Bears will visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football in a game between teams losing much more than they hoped they would in 2023. At the very least, it bodes well for one of them to find themselves on firmer ground heading forward into the next week.

As for the all-time series, the Bears and the Chargers have a relatively sparse history of meetings on the gridiron due to their distinct conference affiliations, which often result in infrequent matchups. The two teams' history dates back to the early days of the American Football League (AFL) in the 1960s.

The Bears and Chargers first faced off on October 18, 1970 in a game actually played at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Bears would lose the first three matchups against the Chargers, including this one by a final score of 20-7, before sweeping San Diego in every game from 1984 to 2003. The Bears lead the all-time series by a thin margin of 7-6, and both teams have split the last four contests with the last one a Chargers win in 2019. They've never met in the postseason.

While the Bears and Chargers do not share a fierce rivalry, their infrequent matchups have provided football fans with memorable moments over the years. Notable players like Walter Payton and Philip Rivers have graced the field during these games, leaving their marks on the series history.

As both franchises continue to evolve and compete in their respective conferences, it is possible that their limited series history may expand in the future, creating new moments for fans to cherish.
