Troy Aikman gets bodied following Patrick Mahomes' third Super Bowl win
By Ryan Heckman
Patrick Mahomes is now a 3-time Super Bowl Champion. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is on pace to shatter every NFL record known at the position, whether we're talking Super Bowl wins, appearances, or all the regular season records we know he'll eventually break.
One obscure milestone Mahomes has officially hit, though, became extra popular on social media following the Super Bowl LVIII victory.
Five years ago, ESPN analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman responded to a tweet sent out by The Athletic Kansas City. The original tweet simply stated: "Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman's career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games."
Aikman then went on to retweet their post with the caption, "Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles." This made sense, at the time, because Mahomes had yet to win a Super Bowl ring. Now? Oh, how the tables have turned.
Troy Aikman may have won three Super Bowls, but he definitely lost this one without even playing in it.
In hindsight, Aikman probably regrets sending that tweet. But to be fair, we all probably have one or two of those instances in life. It happens. But for it to happen and then get tripled-down on? That's pretty hilarious. You've got to admit. And, just for fun, it didn't stop there. Here's one of many examples of even more hilarious retweets of Aikman's 5-year-old mistake.
We could go on and on with countless more posts from fans and media, alike, but you get the idea already. Aikman's tweet aged like anything but fine wine. Well, if you're a Chiefs fan, it aged perfectly well, I suppose.
Aikman is justifiably criticized for being a Hall of Fame quarterback who is often labeled as a guy who wasn't all that special. Many believe he was just surrounded by excellent talent, which is something Mahomes wasn't necessarily given this year outside of Travis Kelce.
Aikman never once threw for over 4,000 yards or even surpassed 23 passing touchdowns in a season. To call him a Hall of Famer seems to be more of the league and voters checking a box based on Super Bowl rings.
Just how far will Mahomes separate himself from the likes of Aikman? Oh, he's just getting started.
