#5: 1987 (4-11)

Following the Chiefs' snapping their franchise-worst fourteen-year playoff drought, the first season in the brief Frank Gansz era proved to be a significant disappointment.

On a positive note, Kansas City managed to secure three victories in their final five games, with their losses being narrow, decided by just three points, and one going into overtime. However, the season began on a grim note with a 1-9 start, including a disheartening nine-game losing streak spanning Weeks 2 to 11, which resulted in a dire -153 point differential.

Despite a somewhat respectable 3-5 record within the division, the Chiefs finished in last place in the AFC West. Memorable defeats included a resounding 42-0 loss against Dan Marino and the Dolphins, a 43-14 thrashing in Seattle, and a 23-3 defeat in Green Bay.

1987 also marked Todd Blackledge's final season with the Chiefs, commencing an era without a first-round quarterback on the roster until the arrival of Patrick Mahomes in 2017.

Although the overall tone of the season was predominantly negative, there were some redeeming aspects. It marked Christian Okoye's debut year in the NFL, and the Chiefs secured the #2 overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft, which they utilized to select the future all-pro pass rusher, Neil Smith.

In terms of rankings, the 1987 Chiefs stood at 54th (out of 60) in Win %, 55th in Point Differential per Game, and 56th in SRS.
