Maybe Rashee Rice's injury isn't as bad as Chiefs fans thought
The Kansas City Chiefs might have won against the Los Angeles Chargers this past weekend to move to 4-0 on the year but the biggest storyline from the game was the injury to Rashee Rice. After Patrick Mahomes threw an interception, both Rice and Mahomes were trying to tackle the defender and it ended with Rice having to be carted off the field.
The initial news wasn't good, or that's what Andy Reid said when asked for an update. On Monday, however, Adam Schefter tweeted that after further testing, "There remains uncertainty over the extent of his injury". That prompted Dr. David Chao to say, "When it comes to ACL injuries, no definitive news of tear is considered good news".
Chao hasn't been the only doctor to weigh in on this with Jesse Morse, MD urging people not to drop Rice when setting their fantasy football rosters for the week. A doctor telling people not to give up on Rice in fantasy would lead us to believe that he believes there's a chance Rice will come back at some point this season.
Is the Rashee Rice injury not as bad as Chiefs fans were led to believe?
Without Rice, the Chiefs are down to Xavier Worthy, Justin Watson, and JuJu Smith-Schuster as their starting wide receivers. No disrespect to these three but they're not exactly the most menancing bunch. Getting Rice back at any point this season would be huge because it'd give Patrick Mahomes his best weapon back down the stretch in time for the playoffs.
Chiefs fans assumed the worst when the injury happened because, while most of us watching aren't doctors, it looked pretty bad. Anytime a player is carted off the field, you hope for the best while expecting the worst and that was the case with Rice's injury.
If the Chiefs can somehow avoid a major injury to Rice this early in the season and get him back at some point later on, that would be a huge bullet dodged for them as they look to three-peat as Super Bowl champions.
