The 2024 NFL Draft is just around the corner, and the Kansas City Chiefs are slated to pick seven times. They have two selections in the fifth round, none in the sixth round, and one in every other round.

Although they are the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs still have needs to fill. Fortunately, general manager Brett Veach has positioned the Chiefs as one of the best drafting teams in the NFL in recent years. Some of their needs are fairly urgent, while they can afford to be picky on others.

How should the Chiefs prioritize each position group in the draft? Given how unpredictable it is every year, it's almost impossible to know who the team will pick since they're picking so far back. Players they could have been targeting may go off the board earlier than expected, while others may unexpectedly fall. There's also the realistic scenario of the Chiefs trading up within the first round, which we know Brett Veach doesn't shy away from.

Let's review every position group on the Chiefs and rate how much they should target each one in the draft. Here's the rating system we'll use:

  • High: A significant need and should be addressed on day one or two.
  • Medium: Minor need and could be addressed on day two or early on day three. If the value is great, a first-round pick may be used on it.
  • Low: A fairly insignificant need, if at all. Neither a 1st or 2nd round pick should be spent on the position. A third-round pick could be used if the value is good, but they should wait until day three if they even use a pick on it.

Quarterback

I'm not going to waste much time here. Although it is a solid draft class for quarterbacks, the Chiefs already have the best one in the game as well as a solid backup. Kansas City has no business picking a signal-caller until the sixth or seventh round. I could foresee a scenario where Andy Reid opts to use their final pick on a developmental backup with upside, but the Chiefs haven't used a draft selection on a quarterback since Patrick Mahomes in 2017.

The Verdict: Low
