Harrison Butker signs four-year extension with Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a new contract extension with kicker Harrison Butker that will keep the specialist at Arrowhead through the 2028 season.

NFL reporter Adam Schefter has terms of the four-year deal worth up to $25.6 million with $17.75 million guaranteed.

Harrison Butker's introduction to Chiefs Kingdom was a minor blip on the NFL's transaction wire, an early-season poaching by Brett Veach in his first season as the team's general manager. Seven years later, Butker is now into his third NFL contract and looks the part of a long-term franchise icon.

Incumbent kicker Cairo Santos had been sidelined by a groin injury back in 2017 for a few weeks during the preseason, and his recovery wasn't lining up with the start of the regular season. Veach turned to the Carolina Panthers who had Butker sitting on the practice squad to begin the year. It didn't cost the Chiefs anything to sign him away for a tryout on the active roster, and just like that, the team was set for years to come.

Butker went on to convert 38 of a league-leading 42 field goals that season for the Chiefs in 13 games—good for a 90.5 percent mark. He also made every one of his 28 extra point attempts and averaged over 78 percent touchbacks on all kickoffs. From there, Butker would blossom into one of the league's steadiest kickers with plenty of power to boot. Butker led the NFL in 2023 with a long of 62 yards and he hit another 60 yard-attempt last year.

Not only has Butker turned in one sensational season after another for the Chiefs but he becomes even more of a sure thing in the postseason. Last winter, he went 11 for 11 on field goals during the team's Super Bowl run. Butker is also 6 of 7 from 50 yards or more in the playoffs.

Butker was coming into the last year of a five-year extension signed back in 2019 worth up to to $20.3 million.
