A familiar face to Chiefs Kingdom got some bad news this weekend. A scary neck injury is going to keep Shane Buechele out for an "extended period of time", per his head coach with the Buffalo Bills, Sean McDermott.
Word broke on Monday about the injury and that it's serious enough that the Bills are contemplating further roster moves to make up for the loss.
It wasn't so long ago that Shane Buechele was an impressive young quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, a developmental arm who had staved off enough competition to believe he might have what it takes to take over the QB2 role one day.
Just last season, the Chiefs watched Chad Henne retire from the game after nearly 15 years in the NFL. The belief was that Buechele might be capable of stepping up into the role instead of lingering as a healthy scratch on Sundays or subsisting on the team's practice squad.
Instead, the Chiefs went with Blaine Gabbert at backup quarterback, a move that flied in the face of Buechele's development and revealed the writing on the wall. From there, the Chiefs let Buechele go and he finally found a place to call home with the Bills last August.
Buechele entered the NFL as a rookie free agent following a solid career at SMU in 2021. He lasted two years before the Chiefs decided to bring in Carson Wentz as QB2 and lean into Chris Oladokun and Ian Book as scout team possibilties.
