The Kansas City Chiefs surprised most of their fans and the reporters who follow the team with the decision to not bring back Shane Buechele in any capacity for the 2023 season following what looked like a successful preseason with the team. Fortunately for the young quarterback, Buechele has found a second home in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter had word on Thursday that the Bills were signing Buechele to their practice squad.

The Buffalo Bills are giving Shane Buechele his second NFL home.

The Chiefs came into the preseason with Patrick Mahomes entrenched as the obvious starter at quarterback and, by all accounts, held a legitimate competition for the backup role between Buechele as a young holdover from the last couple of years and newly-signed veteran free agent Blaine Gabbert.

Buechele and Gabbert both looked very solid for much of the preseason, but Buechele's last outing against the Cleveland Browns was not so successful. The Chiefs then brought back only developmental arm Chris Oladokun to the team's practice squad to serve as the scout team QB for a second consecutive year.

Leaving Buechele out of the mix entirely was an interesting decision given that a third quarterback is now given a bonus on a roster of being activated on game days without taking up one of the rare active roster spots. The Chiefs decided to go forward with only two quarterbacks anyway for the sake of carrying more players at other positions.

For now, Buechele will take what he's learned from Andy Reid and Mahomes and now add it to what Josh Allen and the Bills' offensive coaches can teach him.
