Chiefs vs. Saints: Handing out the game balls from preseason Week 1

There were more than a few young and new Chiefs players that flashed in the first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. Here we break down who our game balls would go to in Sunday's loss.

After each game this season, Arrowhead Addict is going to be awarding game balls to the most deserving Kansas City Chiefs players. There will be four different categories: offense, defense, special teams, and rookies.

As hard as it is to flash in the preseason due to low snap counts for some, there were a few Chiefs that stood out in Week 1 during the team's preseason loss to the Saints. These exhibition game awards will look a lot different than the regular season, I would imagine. That is because some of these game-ball winners are second-half standouts who may not even make the final roster.

With that being said, these roster hopefuls have to start somewhere and they hope to turn these performances into the organization giving them a long, hard look. Let’s dive into who our special team's game ball goes to.

Special teams game ball: Harrison Butker

Get ready to hear this name a lot in this article this season. Harrison Butker did not do anything too flashy in Sunday's matchup, but he was perfect in his opportunities. He made all three of his extra points and kicked a 36-yarder through the uprights.

Former New York Giant wide receiver Richie James had a nice return of 31 yards, but we decided to give Butker the edge here. Punter Tommy Townsend had 5 punts for an average of 42.8 yards per punt but failed to pin any inside the 20. That average is a little down from his average last year, however, but he did have a booming 58-yard punt.
