3. Andy Reid vs. Mike McDaniel
There are only a few people in the NFL that could be labeled as “masterminds”. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has a proven track record of having one of the best offenses year in and year out. Many quarterbacks have been successful (i.e. Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes). Numerous players at every position have seen high levels of success. Reid has consistently put a good product on the field from an offensive perspective for over two decades with two different organizations
Rocky Magana of Arrowhead Pride has the best way to describe Andy Reid's offense: "It’s a short to intermediate, pass-first offense that is run out of the shotgun. It leverages player's strengths, focusing on spreading out the defense and finding open grass on the boundaries. It’s Reid’s West Coast Gun offense."
Reid knows how to identify good players and understands how to maximize their skillset. Not only has he seen the fruit of his own intellect, he has groomed numerous others throughout the years to become prosperous head coaches.
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is only in his second year leading an organization. The jury is still out on whether he is a young mastermind. McDaniel was hired to give the Dolphins a new offensive identity. His tutelage stems from the Shanahan coaching tree. Prior to joining Miami, he was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. The Dolphins in 2023 are the NFL’s highest-scoring team (33.9 PPG) under McDaniel. Miami's offense also leads the NFL in total yardage (453.3 YPG). He is on the right path to joining Andy Reid as one of the “masterminds” but only time will tell.
