The Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of their 2024 training camp, which is the first of many steps toward three-peating as Super Bowl champions. This year's training camp is already getting chippy, as there have been several instances of the Chiefs getting scrappy on the practice field.
On Wednesday, a play took place where George Karlaftis hits Kadarius Toney hard. We then see Travis Kelce yelling at Karlaftis and it doesn't appear to be pleasantries that he's yelling at his teammate.
This isn't the first time players have lost their cool at training camp and it certainly won't be the last. In fact, before the Karlaftis hit on Toney took place, there was more scrappiness taking place, as Nick Bolton knocked over Justyn Ross after a Trent McDuffie interception.
Chiefs players are getting chippy in training camp
I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that it's training camp and these kinds of plays happen quite frequently. These guys might ultimately be on the same team but right now, it's offense vs. defense and they're keeping that mindset every day when they're practicing.
In the first clip, yes, Karlaftis hit Toney hard but we didn't see the full practice. Maybe Toney had been running his mouth beforehand and Karlaftis was sick of it. Judging by Kelce's reaction, however, Karlaftis might have decided to go all-in with that hit without any previous ammunition.
As for the second clip, the highlight is obviously McDuffie capturing an interception but it's hard to miss Bolton laying out Ross there. Was it a similar possible story where maybe Ross had been chirping all practice long and Bolton was ready to shut him up?
More than likely, these guys are just gearing up for a big season and part of that is dishing out big hits in practice. As long as everyone escapes camp without any major injuries, we'll take the chippiness if it better prepares them for a long and grueling season.
