While Kansas City Chiefs fans may not have been heartbroken to see wide receiver Kadarius Toney leave, it doesn’t mean his NFL career is over—yet. The former first-round pick visited the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, just days before the NFL season kicks off. ESPN analyst Field Yates was the first to report Toney’s meeting with the franchise.
This is the first known connection between a team and Toney since he was left off the Chiefs' 53-man roster last week.
With similar options in the receiving corps and a disappointing 2023 season, Kansas City decided to part ways with Toney, less than two years after acquiring him. The former Florida Gator recorded 41 catches for 340 yards in 20 games with the Chiefs, with most of that production coming in just seven games during the 2022 season.
Is the Kansas City Chiefs trash another team's treasure?
Toney's 2023 season was marred by mistakes, rendering him unplayable after Week 15. Despite his struggles, the elusive wideout boasts two Super Bowl rings, though he was a healthy inactive during Kansas City's most recent championship. Chiefs fans should remember Toney fondly for his pivotal role in Super Bowl LVII, where his 65-yard punt return helped clinch the victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Since entering the league in 2021, Toney has recorded 82 catches for 760 yards and four touchdowns. Kansas City acquired him from the New York Giants, his original team, during the 2022 season.
The Seahawks already boast a strong receiving trio at the top of their depth chart. Led by the explosive DK Metcalf and the reliable veteran Tyler Lockett, they’re counting on sophomore Jaxon Smith-Njigba to prove his worth as the 20th overall pick in last year’s draft. Beyond them, however, there’s a significant drop-off—one that Toney could help bridge.
As a dynamic return specialist, Toney would be an enticing option for Seattle as they seek any help to exorcise their dominant divisional demons, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.
