Adam Schefter says the league is sifting through a "slew of incidents" to decide what to do about Rashee Rice.
The Kansas City Chiefs just learned their first official opponent of the 2024 regular season, but as the path becomes clear for the team to chase a historic three-peat as a dynasty, they still aren't clear whether or not Rashee Rice is going to be around for the ride—at least in part.
As the legal processes and investigations continue into various incidents involving Rice this offseason, the Kansas City wideout finds himself mired in a fog concerning his availability. He faces very real legal punishments which will cascade into some sort of violation of the National Football League's conduct policy as well—bringing further punishment from the league or Chiefs (or both).
It's been a while since we've heard any official word on Rice's availability in 2024, but Adam Schefter shared his thoughts on what is likely to happen—or what the Chiefs are reportedly bracing for.
"The league is certainly looking into it and it sounds like the Chiefs are bracing for a multi-game suspension for Rashee Rice. It doesn’t look like he’s going to be a part of that start of the season, that opening-night game against the Baltimore Ravens," said Schefter.
"Again, the Personal Conduct Policy mandates certain discipline be in place no matter what and the facts right now are such that they are against Rashee Rice and we’ll see what the investigation turns up. There’s certainly concern within the organization considering what happened this offseason; considering that alleged harassment last week, the latest involvement; considering the history that he had in college as well
"There is a slew of incidents here that the league is sifting through that is likely to result in a multi-game suspension and there’s a real possibility that the Chiefs know that they will be without Rashee Rice setting up, of course, the Hollywood Brown revenge game against the Baltimore Ravens, his former team. He signed with the Chiefs this offseason. They’re going to need him. They’re going to need Xavier Worthy. They’re going to need these other players to step up in the absence of Rashee Rice."
Rice is facing eight felony charges related to a multi-vehicle accident that occurred when he was driving at high speeds on a Dallas highway in a sports car with a friend and ended up in a crash. He is also reportedly under investigation for allegedly hitting a photographer at a Dallas nightclub although reports on this differ at the present time.
Rice was a second-round pick of the Chiefs last spring out of SMU.
