Offensive Tackle - Donovan Smith

In my opinion, the Chiefs should look to sign a veteran tackle with starting experience that they would be comfortable starting. However they also need that player to be affordable, should they draft a new tackle or Wanya Morris takes a big enough step forward.. After viewing the free agent options available, I think a reunion with Donovan Smith is their best bet.

Smith was "fine" last season. He played well enough that it didn't stop them from winning the Super Bowl, but there were definitely some shaky performances here and there that could prevent him from getting a big "starter level" paycheck from a team in free agency. If someone else does offer him a sizable deal then the Chiefs should let him go, but if he's available for anything close to the $3 million he made last season he makes a ton of sense for the Chiefs.

I'm personally in favor of the Chiefs trading up in the first round for their long-term solution at left tackle, but I also don't want them to have their hands tied to find their starter in round one in case the guys they like in this class go off the board before they can realistically land one. That's why I like the idea of Donovan Smith as their left tackle insurance policy.

Now it's time to move to the defensive side of the ball.
