Patrick Mahomes offers brutally honest take about Chiefs' schedule
For as much as the NFL preaches about how it values player safety, the schedule the league threw together this season says otherwise. The Kansas City Chiefs' schedule is a prime example of this.
The Chiefs will play their next three games in the span of 11 days and it's not a good look for the league. The back-to-back Super Bowl champs head to Cleveland for this Sunday's game against the Browns, then return to Arrowhead for a Saturday home game against the Texans, and then head to Pittsburgh for a Christmas Day game against the Steelers.
So, not only do the Chiefs have a shorter week than normal between their Week 15 and 16 games but then they have a short turnaround for their Week 17 Christmas game, which is on a Wednesday, against the Steelers. Now, the Saturday to Wednesday turnaround is the same as if they had Sunday/Thursday games but playing two games on short rest back-to-back feels as though the NFL is not practicing what it's preaching.
Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn't hold back when asked about the scheduling. Mahomes said that he's not mad about playing on Christmas and is hoping that K.C. can redeem itself after getting embarrassed at home by the Raiders on Christmas Day last year. From there, however, the tone shifted to frustration.
"It is not a good feeling. I'm excited to play on Christmas to hopefully get back from what we did last year, but you never want to play this many games in this short of time. It's just not great for your body. But at the end of the day, it's your job, your profession. You have to come to work and do it."
Patrick Mahomes slams NFL for scheduling gaffe
This scheduling issue is even more annoying when you consider how important these final four games are for Kansas City's quest for the number one seed. Sure, the Bills losing to the Rams this past weekend helped, as it gave the Chiefs more cushion but playing three games in 11 days with two of those teams being playoff teams is going to be draining.
The Chiefs are already battling injuries and playing so many games in such a short time will be grueling for everyone. Let's just hope the Chiefs get through this stretch with as few injuries as possible and that they've clinched the AFC's top seed when they get out of this three-game tunnel.
