Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to winning big games and big awards. Since joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017 as the 10th overall pick in the draft, Mahomes has helped lead the Chiefs to three Super Bowl wins while collecting three Super Bowl MVP awards and two NFL MVP awards.
Mahomes has made sure to buy into what the rest of the Kansas City sports teams are accomplishing too and the team doing the most right now is, without a doubt, the Kansas City Current. The Current, which entered the NWSL in 2021, just pulled off a historic feat on Saturday night, clinching the 2025 NWSL Shield in record time, as there are five games remaining in the regular season and no team has won the Shield with that many games remaining.

The Current had a 13-point lead over the second-place Washington Spirit heading into their Saturday night match against the Seattle Reign and a win would give them the Shield in front of their home crowd. They won the match 2-0, clinching the Shield in record time and now ensuring they'll be the number one seed and have home field advantage in the playoffs until the NWSL Championship in San Jose on November 22nd.
Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Current make history in 2025 season
As mentioned above, the Current entered the league in 2021 with Mahomes' wife, Brittany, immediately joining Chris and Angie Long's ownership group. Patrick joined the ownership team in 2023 just in time for the team's third season in the league.
The Current are no strangers to being a competitive team, reaching the NWSL Championship in 2022 but coming up short of winning the whole thing. Two years later, they opened up CPKC Stadium, the first stadium built for a women's professional sports team, and made it to the semi-finals but sadly did not get to play in the championship, which was held in their shiny new stadium. This year, they've won the Shield for the first time in franchise history and now have their sights set on winning it all in November.
Mahomes and his family along with other Chiefs players frequently attend games to root on the squad and it won't surprise anyone if he's in attendance for the playoff games this November. Let's hope Mahomes can add another championship ring to his mantle come November. KC BABY!
