While Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are focused on their own playoff push, the franchise quarterback turned his attention briefly to hyping up another fan base in Kansas City. This weekend is the beginning of the NWSL playoffs and, as we know, Mahomes is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current.
Well, with the playoffs kicking off this weekend and the Current sitting as the four-seed, Mahomes was kind enough to narrate a hype-up video ahead of Saturday's match.
In this hype-up video, Mahomes kicks it off by stating, "It takes time to be a champion. Here in Kansas City, we don't wait for the right time. We create it." If anyone knows a thing or two about winning championships in Kansas City, it's definitely Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes sets the stage for KC Current playoff match
The Current opened the first stadium built for a women's soccer team in March with both Patrick and Brittany Mahomes in attendance. The team finished the year with a remarkable 16-3-7 record and scored a record-breaking 57 goals in 2024.
Unfortunately, despite the incredible season the Current put together, their 55 points were only good enough for fourth place in the standings. They're behind the Orlando Pride (60 points), Washington Spirit (56 points), and Gotham FC (56). Landing the fourth seed does mean that the Current get to host a playoff game this weekend, however, and they'll welcome in the North Carolina Courage on Saturday for an 11 a.m. showdown at CPKC Stadium.
The Chiefs are at home next week, hosting the Broncos on Sunday afternoon, so it's very possible that the Mahomeses will be in attendance for the Current's first-ever home playoff game. The Current made the playoffs one other year since re-entering the league and that came in 2022 when they made it all the way to the championship match.
If the Current win this game, they'll likely have to play on the road in Orlando, who earned the top seed in the playoffs. The NWSL Championship is being held at CPKC Stadium though so if the Current can find a way to get there, they'll have homefield advantage in the championship match. High stakes. We know Kansas City is used to those.
