Patrick Mahomes has owned all of his AFC West rivals in his stellar career. He is now a resounding 38-8 in division matchups. This Sunday, he will get another chance to extend that commanding mark against the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers are arguably the most disappointing team in football. Even if you did not project them to make the playoffs in 2026, they still should not have been this bad. The Chargers' wacky turnovers, failure to be competent as a blocking unit, and annual injuries have them at rock bottom. Los Angeles is 0-5 entering Sunday.

Mahomes and the Chiefs know they still cannot take this struggling rival lightly. In fact, recent outings against the Bolts have been incredibly frustrating for Kansas City in more ways than one. Let's look back on Mahomes' numbers against the Chargers so far. Plus, why could the most recent matchups against L.A. lead to potential revenge on Sunday?

Mahomes' career numbers vs. Chargers

Mahomes faced the Chargers in just his second career start to open the 2018 season. Obviously, that campaign saw Kansas City put the NFL on notice. And it allowed Mahomes to quickly put up record-breaking numbers.

In total, Mahomes has battled with the Bolts 14 times. He and the Chiefs are 10-4 in those outings. He has completed 63.6 percent of his passes against this rival. His touchdown-to-interception ratio stands at 28:8. Mahomes even has two rushing touchdowns to his name against the Chargers.

In other spots, Mahomes is averaging 265.5 passing yards per game when facing this opponent. Los Angeles has tallied 24 sacks in those 14 games.

Why Mahomes could seek revenge this Sunday

Two of Mahomes' four losses to the Chargers occurred before Kansas City won back-to-back Super Bowls for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Some crazy mistakes took place for the Chiefs to drop those games.

Kansas City dropped one at home to them in 2018 on Thursday Night Football. The best way to remember this loss is the end of the game, when Mike Williams became a hero for the Chargers. He caught a one-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion on back-to-back snaps. Williams was left as wide open as he could have been for the two-point try. All of that took place with just four seconds left on the clock as the Chargers erased a 28-14 deficit.

Another home loss took place in 2021. In this one, the Chiefs only lost by six, which means a lot more when you look at the greatest reason Kansas City dropped that one to Los Angeles. The Chiefs had four giveaways, as Mahomes threw two interceptions. Tyreek Hill and Clyde Edwards-Helaire each lost a fumble to boot.

Half of Mahomes' four career losses to the Chargers came last season. A season-opening loss in Brazil was followed by much annoyance throughout a trying season. Then, Mahomes started the home game against the Bolts but did not finish it.

Of course, it was against Los Angeles that Mahomes suffered his torn ACL last season. He made a remarkably quick return from that December injury to open this season. But with that injury and pair of losses on his ledger last year, this Sunday could quietly mean much more to Mahomes than most realize on the surface.
