Week 3 brought some surprising results and some almost-surprising results. Kansas City Chiefs fans watched as their squad was in a dogfight with the winless Miami Dolphins. During that game, the Los Angeles Chargers were also playing their Week 3 matchup and, early on, were giving the Buffalo Bills everything they could handle.
When push came to shove, the Chiefs won their game and moved to 3-0, while the Chargers blew their lead, lost any momentum they had built against Buffalo, and dropped to 0-3. Sure, it's still early in the season, but it truly does feel as though we can officially stick a fork in the Bolts. They look more than done.
For what it's worth, the Chargers did look like a much-improved team against the Bills early in the game, but by the fourth quarter, they reverted back to the Chargers we all know and love. They allowed the Bills to come back in that one and ultimately win the game. Now, their seasonc could be over as a result.
Let's recap how things have gone for the Chargers in their three games so far.
Chargers wasted the easiest part of their schedule
In Week 1, the heavily favored Chargers lost by 12 points to the Cardinals, a team that many believe will be in the running for the first overall pick in next year's draft. As we've seen in recent weeks, the Cardinals aren't a good football team, but L.A. made us think otherwise in Week 1.
Week 2 saw the Chargers hosting the Raiders, another team they were favored against. They lost by the exact same score as they did the previous week (26-14) and allowed the Raiders to improve to 2-0 while the Bolts dropped to 0-2.
The Chargers had what were considered to be two "easy" games right out of the gate, but they lost both of those by double digits and on their home turf. That set them up to be 0-2 entering what is an absolute gauntlet of a schedule, including their Week 3 game against the Bills, followed by the Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, and Rams. Woof.
Instead, they entered Week 3 at 0-2 and are now 0-3. To make matters worse for them, they lost to the Bills despite forcing five turnovers.
Justin Herbert's struggles are becoming harder to ignore
This is not what anyone expected out of the Chargers this year, considering they've made the playoffs in each of Jim Harbaugh's two years on the job and brought in Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. It just hasn't clicked, and Herbert's regression is getting harder and harder to ignore.
Herbert has struggled to take care of the football this season, throwing 4 interceptions in 3 games and looking like a shell of himself. McDaniel was supposed to help Herbert grow into the best possible quarterback he could be, but three games in, it's been a disaster.
Chiefs already have a massive advantage over the Chargers
This is good news for the Chiefs because, at 3-0, they have a three-game lead over the Chargers. Plus, the two will play in Week 6, which is right after Kansas City's bye. We all know how good Andy Reid is coming off the bye, and it's very possible that L.A. is winless by that point, considering how tough its schedule is. The Chiefs could be the official final nail in the Chargers' coffin.
Of course, teams play the games for a reason, and because of that, anything can happen. Knowing the Chargers, they could win games they're not supposed to and be right back in the thick of things by the time that Week 6 matchup arrives. After watching their efforts in the first three games, however, that doesn't feel very likely, and that is perfectly fine with Chiefs fans.
