As we inch closer to the start of the 2026 NFL regular season, there will be all sorts of rankings floating around on the web. One of the latest that might have caught some Kansas City Chiefs fans' attention is a ranking of the top 50 players in the league compiled by FanSided's Cody Williams and Jake Beckman.
Two members of the Chiefs made the list. That part might not be so shocking but rather where one of these players ultimately landed could leave Chiefs fans scratching their heads. Patrick Mahomes is indeed on Williams and Beckman's rankings but clocked in at No. 21, which seems incredibly low for the three-time Super Bowl champion.
"Performance-wise, he’s got an impossibly high ceiling, but he does have a floor … and it’s shown its ugly face over the past couple of seasons. That’s why he’s ranked 21st, and that’s why he’s the fourth-highest quarterback."

I wouldn't call the Chiefs reaching the Super Bowl mostly due to Mahomes' heroics in the 2024 season ugly. Sure, last year didn't go according to plan for a team with Super Bowl aspirations but Mahomes was the only reason K.C. was even in any of those games. But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
The NFL is very much a "What have you done for me lately" kind of league and these rankings definitely reflect that. Mahomes is the fourth quarterback on the list, sitting behind Matthew Stafford (2), Josh Allen (8), and Drake Maye (17). While I personally wouldn't have Mahomes as the fourth best quarterback in the NFL, to each their own.
Some of the non-quarterbacks ahead of Mahomes include Myles Garrett (1), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (3), Micah Parsons (4), former Chief Joe Thuney (5), and Ja'Marr Chase (10), to name a few. While Chiefs fans might not agree with these players being ahead of Mahomes, they are all incredibly talented players and worthy of being ranked highly.
In more positive news, Creed Humphrey was the other Chief to make the cut and his ranking feels more appropriate. The All-Pro center landed at No. 25 and that's a much better landing spot for Humphrey than where he landed on the NFL Top 100 this year.
At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and if these guys think there are 20 players in the NFL who are better than Mahomes, then so be it. He can let his play on the field do the talking.
