Connecting the dots of the NFL's head coaching puzzle, it feels fairly certain that Matt Nagy has one obstacle standing in his path between his current post as the former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and the chance to be a head coach once again.
The Atlanta Falcons have zeroed in on former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski to be their new leader, replacing Raheem Morris, who was fired after the regular season. Stefanski was reportedly one of three finalists coveted by the Tennessee Titans after their first round of interviews, which eliminated a key figure from the competition.
Nagy, of course, is reportedly one of the other preferred candidates for the Titans, along with Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Tennessee could still add other options to the mix, especially since they interviewed so many options, but the most prominent rumors have Nagy and Hafley competing for the final spot.
The connection between Nagy and the Titans' head coach opening has been strong all along, and only one reported hurdle remains between them.
The Titans fired Brian Callahan after Week 5 and replaced him for the rest of the 2025 regular season with interim head coach Mike McCoy. Ever since Callahan got the axe, however, Nagy has specifically been tied to the post as a favored candidate, which makes sense given his previous head coaching experience with the Chicago Bears as well as his ties to the front office. Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi was a longtime exec with the Chiefs and spent several years with Nagy.
Hafley is a late arrival to the mix, but he's become a frontrunner for nearly every team that has brought him in. Hafley is reportedly the frontrunner for the Miami Dolphins head coach opening after the team moved on from Mike McDaniel. It's possible the Titans' decision is made even easier if Miami makes a move, which could leave Nagy as the obvious announcement for Tennessee.
Nagy was the head coach for the Chicago Bears from 2018-21 and has served as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator for the last three seasons. His contract with the Chiefs has officially expired, so even if the Titans post goes to someone else, it's likely that Andy Reid will bring in someone else to occupy that spot, despite the lack of reports or rumors on where the team might go next.
