Unfortunately, it might finally be time for the Kansas City Chiefs to face the music and accept that the playoffs just aren't happening for them this year. The talking heads sure seem to think so, with some already discussing what moves the team should make in the offseason to get back to the Super Bowl.

One of the most frustrating parts of the Chiefs' struggles this season has been that the wide receiver position hasn't gone the way fans were hoping it would. Many thought that as soon as Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Worthy were all healthy and available at the same time, it'd help Patrick Mahomes and this offense thrive. That has not been the case at all though, sadly.

With that being the reality we're dealing with, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN floated out a wide receiver option for the Chiefs in free agency this spring. Fowler suggested that the Chiefs should target Alec Pierce, who is currently playing for the Indianapolis Colts.

"Alec Pierce would satisfy that need in Kansas City, which has been starved for explosive playmaking on the outside since Tyreek Hill was traded after the 2021 season," Fowler wrote.
"The Chiefs are much lower on space, sitting at negative-$42.8 million, but cuts are on the way for a team that might look drastically different this time next year."

As Chiefs fade, Jeremy Fowler pushes intriguing Alec Pierce possibility

This would be a welcomed move for the Chiefs to make, as Pierce has been quite the weapon for the Colts despite that team not consistently having a good enough quarterback to really get the most out of him. The former second-round pick out of Cincinnati has 38 catches for 769 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games this year while averaging 20.2 yards per catch.

The 2024 season was Pierce's best to date, as the Cincinnati product came away with 37 catches for 824 yards and seven touchdowns. That was despite having Joe Flacco and Anthony Richardson as his quarterbacks, so clearly the guy is able to get open and make magic happen when the ball comes his way. Just imagine what he could accomplish with Patrick Mahomes throwing to him.

As Fowler alluded to, this would be an expensive move for the Chiefs to make. He also noted that cuts will likely be happening that could make this more of a reality for a team desperately needing to revamp its receiver room. We haven't seen Brett Veach add a pricey wideout in quite some time but if this team is serious about getting back into the Super Bowl conversation next year, adding Alec Pierce could make a lot of sense for them.
