Chris Simms says the quiet part out loud about the Chiefs' misfires at wide receiver

It's not going the way the Chiefs had hoped.

The 2025 NFL regular season is inching closer to Week 15 and the Kansas City Chiefs are in uncharted territory. They're 6-7 with four games to go and their playoff chances are looking grim. While some might say the whole "When it's grim, be the grim reaper" quote that Andy Reid once famously told Patrick Mahomes, this year doesn't feel like the same vibes.

One of the most frustrating parts of the Chiefs' lackluster season has been the underwhelming performances from the wide receivers. Everyone figured once this team got Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Hollywood Brown all together on the field at the same time, that it'd be game over for the defenses lined up across from them. That sadly hasn't been the case.

That's something Pro Football Talk co-host and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms pointed out while appearing on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning. Patrick asked Simms what he thinks the Chiefs need to improve on and Simms didn't hesitate to criticize Kansas City's receivers.

"They're going to have to change the roster a little bit and change their team," said Simms. "We know they've never been a great running team but some of these receivers they have, right? Xavier Worthy has not worked out to the capacity that they intended to as a first-round pick. Hollywood Brown, smaller receiver, hasn't really been able to contribute that way. That's why a lot of teams dont like small receivers. You run 4.29 but as soon as I do this (stiff-arm gesture) and touch you, you run 4.75 and now you're not that scary."

Chris Simms doesn't mince words when blasting Chiefs wide receivers

It's been pretty hit-and-miss when it comes to these receivers, that's for sure. Rice's return to the lineup has been nice but he drops too many passes and got completely demolished by the Texans defenders on Sunday night. Worthy has just one touchdown in 11 games, so yeah fans would probably agree that he's been a little disappointing this year. Brown has just sort of been there and not added anything meaningful this season.

This is something that Brett Veach needs to figure out in the offseason. These receivers aren't the kind of weapons that are helping Patrick Mahomes do what he needs to do to be great and that's obviously a problem. Simms' comments give us some insight into that and hopefully, Veach can add some playmakers to this offense who can truly help Mahomes and the rest of the team shine.
