We all know that the Kansas City Chiefs are beloved in their home states of Kansas and Missouri, but new data from a major retailer suggests that the Chiefs’ popularity is actually even greater than we might think.

According to Rally House, a sports shop with more than 300 stores in 29 different states, the Chiefs could be the most popular sports team in the entire country.

Rally House published a post this week that said the Chiefs were the highest-selling team in 15 different US states since 2009—15! That list, of course, includes Kansas and Missouri, but also Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, South Dakota, Hawai’i, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

That makes the Chiefs the most dominant team geographically by far.

Chiefs are outselling NFL rivals on their home turf

Across the US, only two other teams were number one in multiple states – the Philadelphia Eagles (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the Michigan Wolverines (Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire).

But what stood out to me most was that, of the 15 states the Chiefs top the list in, six of them—California, Washington, Georgia, Nevada, Tennessee and Oregon—all have professional teams based there, which means the Chiefs are outselling the home teams in their own states.

That includes the Seattle Seahawks, who have some of the most passionate fans in the NFL, and, even more hilariously, two of Kansas City’s division rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders. It’s no wonder we see so much red at “road” games at SoFi and Allegiant Stadiums when people in Nevada and California would rather buy Chiefs gear than stuff for their local teams instead!

Overall, six different NFL teams and four baseball teams ranked number one on Rally House’s list in at least one state, with the rest of the states topped by local college teams.

Rally House data reflects Chiefs' growing national reach

Of course, there’s a grain of salt to be taken with this. Rally House is just one retailer among many, this data doesn’t show which team is the highest-selling overall by total sales, and it’s also worth pointing out that Rally House was founded in Kansas City as well.

But all that aside, there is still no denying that Kansas City’s popularity is growing and spreading across the country. The Chiefs no longer feel like a small team with a following in just the Midwest; now they are a national brand.

The team's recent on-field success and three Super Bowl championships, plus the massive exposure brought by Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship, have turned the Chiefs into one of the most recognizable sports teams in the US, despite Kansas City ranking in the bottom eight for market size in the NFL. The Chiefs have 17.2 million social media followers, which ranks as the fourth-most among NFL teams and is almost double the entire population of Kansas and Missouri combined.

Kansas and Missouri have always loved the Chiefs, and now it turns out that a bunch of other states love them now as well.
