Last offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs had put a major emphasis on upgrading their offensive line. The team spent a first-round pick on Josh Simmons and also signed Jaylon Moore in free agency. While Wanya Morris and Jawaan Taylor are no longer on the team, clearly, the Chiefs felt they did enough to bolster things upfront.
Not everyone seems to be convinced that the unit is good enough, however. From Warren Sharp ranking the Chiefs' OL in the bottom half of the league to ESPN saying that offensive tackle is the Chiefs' biggest weakness, it's clear that people view Kansas City's offensive line as a potential liability.
That's why it shouldn't be a surprise that the Chiefs continue to be linked to other potential offensive tackles. Brett Veach and Andy Reid clearly believe that Simmons and Moore can get it done on the bookends but others seem to have their doubts.
Ernesto Cova of Dawg Pound Daily is one of those doubters. Cova recently put together a list of teams that could trade for Dawand Jones, an offensive tackle for the Browns who might be on the outside looking in to make the Browns' roster. As you can predict based on the topic of this article, the Chiefs made the cut.
"Patrick Mahomes is coming off the first major injury of his career, so the Chiefs should want to emphasize pass-protection for their prized quarterback. Josh Simmons showed glimpses of greatness as a rookie left tackle, but what about the other side? Jones would be a low-risk/high-reward gamble at just $1.5 million a year, per Spotrac."
Dawand Jones could make sense as OL depth for Chiefs
Jones, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State in 2023, started just three games last year but missed the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in September. He was a pretty good pass-blocker during his rookie season but his PFF grades declined over the past two years. That could also be blamed on the Browns' offensive line woes as a whole though.
Jones played right tackle his rookie year but predominantly played on the left side the past two years, which could also maybe have contributed to his less-than-ideal stats. He wouldn't be a bad option to bring in as a backup or depth option but what would the Browns be asking for him? He's on a team-friendly contract and has shown potential in the past.
If the Chiefs could get Jones for a late-round pick, then by all means, go for it. The more depth, the merrier. Anything more than that would be a resounding "no".
