Latest Chiefs-Texans weather report says history is on Houston's side

But, will it matter in the end?

When the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans kick off Saturday afternoon in this year's NFL Divisional Round, it'll be a rematch of what ended up being a monumental game just a few weeks ago.

When the Chiefs beat Houston to improve to 14-1 and all but secure the AFC's no. 1 seed back on December 21, 2024 the two teams also shared a scary on-field moment. That was the game in which Texans wideout Tank Dell went down with a catastrophic knee injury which saw the life taken out of Arrowhead, momentarily.

As the two teams get set for a rematch, the Texans are coming off a dismantling of the L.A. Chargers in the Wild Card Round. Now riding some momentum on the back of their tenacious defensive performance a week ago, Houston might end up being a bigger challenge than some Chiefs fans realize.

And, if history has anything to say about it, the Texans have more than just a chance in this one. At kickoff, the weather is supposed to see temperatures drop down to 22 degrees with wind gusts up to 25 mph.

More Chiefs news:

Believe it or not, looking at this game purely from a weather standpoint, Houston should be feeling confident. If the weather report holds true for kickoff, this will go down as the third-coldest game the Texans have ever played. And, the Texans happened to have won their two coldest games played.

Their second-coldest game came back when they traveled to take on the Chicago Bears and, at kickoff, it was 12 degrees. Their coldest ever? It was against Green Bay in 2008 when the kickoff temperature was just 3 degrees. Once again, the Texans won both games.

Although history is on the Texans' side, it doesn't bode well for C.J. Stroud against Kansas City

Now, even though the Texans won both of their coldest games an average of two decades ago, things have obviously changed for both franchises since then. First of all, the Texans get to play against Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and one of the league's top defenses. That, in and of itself, makes this a completely different story.

Secondly, and most importantly, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has actually struggled in cold weather games. He has played two games where temperatures dropped lower than 30 degrees and lost them both.

In those two games, Stroud went a combined 42-of-72 for 419 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

So, historically speaking, yes, the Texans should be feeling confident. But, as Chiefs fans will quickly point out, this is a "what have you done for me lately?" type of league.

And, lately, Mahomes and the Chiefs have been dominant. There's a reason this team is going for their third-straight Super Bowl title.
