Time and again, the Kansas City Chiefs have shown they aren't afraid to part ways with star cornerbacks in their prime. Trent McDuffie becomes the latest example following the club's decision to trade him to the Los Angeles Rams, though doing so doesn't come without questions.

Among the most pressing matters following McDuffie's departure is what this means for his now ex-teammate in the defensive backfield, Jaylen Watson, who is a pending unrestricted free agent. The Chiefs have suddenly left themselves vulnerable to losing two crucial secondary pieces amid a pivotal offseason.

Was sending McDuffie to the Rams done with Watson's future in mind? Is there no correlation between their respective situations? We shall see, though the blockbuster Kansas City-Los Angeles swap at least brings up the conversation.

Chiefs' Trent McDuffie trade brings Jaylen Watson's free agency to the forefront

Recent intel suggests Watson could get $18 million annually or more on the open market. The Chiefs may be more inclined to meet his demands now that they don't have to pay McDuffie, who's reportedly eyeing a market-setting contract extension.

It's been assumed that Watson all but priced himself out of Kansas City's range following a breakout 2025 campaign. Could not having to pay McDuffie change the calculus? It's hard to envision the latter's exit hurting the former's odds of staying with the Chiefs.

However, the Chiefs' latest move doesn't necessarily boost Watson's odds of sticking around. If anything, you can argue that he has more leverage in negotiations after seeing McDuffie head to the Rams. This is a double-edged sword; it's all about perspective.

Watson is a homegrown talent and fan favorite who's blossomed into a well-rounded contributor and two-time Super Bowl champion. Yet, retaining him might prove to be too costly. The Chiefs are ostensibly taking cost-effective measures at a position they've drafted and developed quite well, including himself, McDuffie, Nohl Williams and L'Jarius Sneed.

The lack of established options without McDuffie creates a greater sense of urgency for Kansas City. Meanwhile, it also gives Watson another leg up in any discussions between him and the Chiefs. This puts general manager Brett Veach in an unenviable spot of facing a decision with no clear answer.

Outside of Watson, Williams is the next starting corner on the Chiefs' roster. There's also Kristian Fulton, who was a healthy scratch for much of this past season despite signing a two-year, $20 million deal last March. So, one way or another, Kansas City will have to address the position almost by default.
