There's no other way to say it: the Kansas City Chiefs laid a giant egg on Super Bowl Sunday. In an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs' offense looked as bad as any single performance in the Patrick Mahomes era and the defense eventually lost their grip on keeping things close.
In every single facet of Super Bowl 59, the Chiefs came up short—and ridiculously so—against the Eagles.
Going forward, it's the kind of loss that's going to be tough to stomach and several players on the team admitted as much in the aftermath. In the face of such collective failure, there's precious little to say other than what's already been said, but rookie safety Jaden Hicks said it well as he summed up his perspective after the game.
The Chiefs' rookie safety had a veteran's perspective on the loss to the Eagles.
When speaking with Steve Walls, host of "The W" on 100.1 FM, Hicks explained his mindset following the 40-22 loss.
"It’s not a good feeling right now, especially after my first one. But you know, this team has been here before and this offseason you’ve just gotta work extra hard. So you’ve gotta come back harder this time and be ready for next season."
The Chiefs' defense held strong in the early going of the game, but multiple turnovers by Patrick Mahomes and the team's offense allowed the Eagles to stack up points despite the best efforts from Steve Spagnuolo's players. Hicks says he was proud of what they were able to do given the final score.
"[Jalen Hurts] made some really good throws. Props to him and that team," he said. "I thought we did a pretty good job in shutting down their game plan."
It was largely quiet in the locker room following the game, but Andy Reid's message to the team was pretty succinct and straightforward. Hicks relayed Reid's words to his team: "It just wasn’t our day. But you can’t make excuses. You’ve just gotta come back and work harder. "
