The Kansas City Chiefs and their fans had a really rough Super Bowl. The Chiefs were on the receiving end of one of the worst Super Bowl beatdowns in the history of the game. The final score was 40-22, but it felt so much more lopsided than that. Coming off of all the anti-Chiefs hysteria going into the game, it didn't take long for the ugly Super Bowl performance to spur talk about how this one game exposed the Chiefs as frauds.
While this Super Bowl game was absolutely an embarrassment for the Chiefs, it doesn't change anything when it comes to the Chiefs' past accomplishments. The Chiefs entered this season as a modern dynasty and making another Super Bowl and getting clubbed doesn't create a net loss on your historical significance. Anyone who says so is just wanting to discredit a team they don't like. I guess on the plus side, this game proves the NFL isn't rigged for the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been elite over the past seven seasons
Let's not forget that the Chiefs have been on a run like we've never seen over the past seven seasons. They've made seven straight AFC Championship Games. Their worst seasons over the past seven seasons have been overtime losses in the AFCCG or ugly losses in the Super Bowl. The Cincinnati Bengals call those the best years in franchise history.
The Chiefs have been to five of the last six Super Bowls and won three of them, including the incredibly rare back-to-back Super Bowl wins. They were also the only team in NFL history to make it back to the Super Bowl after winning back-to-back championships. They are one of the all-time great teams and dynasties in the history of the NFL. Period.
What this loss did was take away the ability of the Chiefs to claim they were the BEST dynasty in the history of the sport. The New England Patriots had the longest run with the most total championships, but completing the NFL's first "three-peat" and adding a fourth Super Bowl win in six years (on top of the accomplishments I listed above) would have given them a strong argument that this was the most dominant run any NFL team had ever been on. That is now gone.
It stinks that Chiefs fans can't pound their chest today and tell all of their haters that the team is the best to ever do it, but don't let those same haters tell you that everything K.C. has accomplished is now tainted somehow. What the Chiefs have accomplished is amazing. Was this game ugly and incredibly frustrating? Definitely. Do they need to take a hard look at the current roster if they want to make another run next year? Sure, but every other NFL fan base would kill for the success Chiefs Kingdom has witnessed in Kansas City in the past seven years.
It's understandable to be frustrated or disappointed about how things ended, but as the dust settles and we turn the page towards the offseason, make sure you still appreciate everything the Chiefs have done since Patrick Mahomes became the starter. For years I dreamed of just getting to see my favorite team make a Super Bowl. Now I'm brokenhearted that they didn't "three-peat". There is definitely some perspective to have there. It may just take a few days for the wounds to heal until we can all recognize it.
