When it comes to Hollywood Brown, we're choosing hope. We've been choosing hope for quite some time now.
Ever since the Chiefs convinced Brown to sign on the dotted line (is it really dotted?) back in the spring as a free agent wide receiver signing a one-year deal, we've been filled with hope for what the veteran pass catcher would bring to the Chiefs offense.
On Tuesday, Brown decided to post something to social media but instead of choosing clarity, he went with the ol' cryptic athlete angle. The only thing given to fans on Tuesday afternoon was a clock emoji and it was an old-fashioned alarm clock at that.
So what does this mean? Well, we're hoping (there's that word again) that it means "time" as in "it's almost time" as in "it's almost time to welcome Hollywood back to the field" as in "it's almost time to welcome Hollywood Brown back to the field after suffering a sternoclavicular injury on the first play of the preseason."
Yes, that's right, after months of dreaming of the pairing of Brown with Patrick Mahomes, of watching the two build offseason chemistry with private workouts of their own, of watching the trust and timing develop on the field at OTAs, the football gods frowned on the Chiefs offense and dealt Brown an injury on his very first catch in the preseason. It was ridiculous. It was unfair.
After sitting out the first couple of weeks, the Chiefs eventually put Brown on injured reserve when it was clear he needed surgery and significant time to heal. This clavicle injury was worse than the one suffered by Tyreek Hill a few years before, where only. a handful of games were missed.
In the ensuing weeks, it's been rumored that Brown could return by season's end instead of just forgetting about him completely. Those rumors typically focus on a potential playoff push for the Chiefs, but Brown is now posting in mid-November. Perhaps this insinuates something is soon or that he's anxious to return.
Then again, it's also possible that Brown loves clocks or that it's time to wake up or that he simply sat on his phone wrong. My mom has literally called me twice this week saying both times that it was clicking the wrong button on her phone.
But we choose hope on this day, hope that the Chiefs might just have themselves someone to stretch the field in all the ways we pictured six months ago before our hearts were broken by so many injuries.
