Super Bowl 59 was a month and a half ago but until Super Bowl 60 comes around, this game won't stop being talked about, especially with the Kansas City Chiefs being on the losing end. The Chiefs had the opportunity to go for the coveted three-peat but couldn't pull it off, as the Philadelphia Eagles outplayed them in every facet.
The Chiefs were blown out and former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson said he wasn't the least bit surprised about the result. While appearing on the panel for eMLS CUP 2025, Johnson was asked about his thoughts on the game and the result.
"I'm not surprised," Johnson said about the Chiefs' loss. "I mean, you watched them all year. You understood the defensive line, and that was there. I call it the meat and potatoes of their defense: always one up front in any football game, no matter what, if it turns out as strong as they are. You understood the Chiefs' weakness was on the offensive line. The offensive line has been [expletive] up all year long."
Johnnson putting the blame on the offensive line isn't far off, as the unit did have a historically bad performance. It's now the second time the Chiefs have lost a Super Bowl due to their o-line being woefully unprepared. Johnson said that, in the past, K.C. has able to get past its offensive line issues because of how great Patrick Mahomes is but that wasn't the case this time.
"They've had a continuous merry-go-round of putting people in certain positions to see what fits. It never worked. But Mahomes was so great that he could overcome most of the struggles with the offensive line, right? But get to the [expletive] Eagles, who got all those young dogs up there from Georgia, and that's what you get. I knew it would probably go like, I didn't know it would be that bad; I knew they had the edge."
Chad Johnson blames the Chiefs' offensive line for their Super Bowl 59 defeat
The loss might have happened a month and a half ago but if you ask most Chiefs fans, they'll probably say it still hurts a lot. Kansas City was on the cusp of making history and to fall short of that despite coming so close makes it hurt even more because it's not crazy to say that they likely won't be in that situation ever again.
It's hard enough as it is getting to a Super Bowl and winning it so being on the verge of three-peating again feels like an impossible task. Johnson's not wrong with his assessment here though. The offensive line was a major issue, not just in that game but all season long.
Joe Thuney playing left tackle fixed it for a little bit but the Eagles were prepared and went at the weak o-line hard. It paid off and they won the game by double-digits.
