Some tragic news emerged over the weekend with the news that Kelvin Joseph was involved in a crash near Plano, Texas in which a motorcyclist was killed. Joseph was arrested and charged on Saturday for both driving while intoxicated (DWI) and collision while involving personal injury/death, per WFAA (ABC affiliate in Dallas).
A cornerback who impressed in a preseason stint with the Kansas City Chiefs one year ago, Joseph reportedly called the police to report his involvement in the accident. He did so approximately 40 minutes after Richardson, Texas, officials responded to the incident on U.S. Highway 75.
Former Chiefs preseason standout Kelvin Joseph has been arrested following a fatal crash in Texas over the weekend.
The Chiefs took a long look at Joseph last offseason after signing him to a reserve/futures deal in January. He last through OTAs, minicamp, and training camp before failing to make the active roster when cuts were due before the season began.
For those who closely followed the Chiefs' preseason, Joseph was viewed as a potential surprise candidate to make the team with a strong preseason showing. The biggest problem for Joseph was that the Chiefs had too much young talent competing for limited slots. Even on the practice squad, general manager Brett Veach also liked Nic Jones, Eric Scott, and Keith Taylor.
Joseph's most recent experience in the National Football League came courtesy of the Minnesota Vikings. However, it's hardly worth mentioning since it featured a quick two-day stint on the team's practice squad in December. Before that, Joseph had caught on with the Indianapolis Colts following his release from the Chiefs. The Colts kept him around for the first two months of the 2024 season.
The Dallas Cowboys ushered Joseph into the NFL with great expectations after spending a second-round pick on him in the 2021 NFL Draft. The former Kentucky product was taken at No. 44 overall but lasted only two seasons in Dallas before being traded to the Miami Dolphins.
Most recently, Joseph had caught on with the D.C. Defenders in the UFL. He had 30 total tackles and 3 pass breakups in 9 games so far this spring.
