Former Chiefs cornerback hits free agency once again after release from Colts
By Matt Conner
Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Kelvin Joseph felt like a potential sleeper to make the active roster cut just a few weeks ago. Four weeks into the regular season, he's once again looking for a team to play for after being released by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts announced several minor roster moves on Tuesday as they sorted out their practice squad going into a showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Among the players on the outs was Joseph, who might be running out of opportunities.
It's a bit odd to think that the NFL has no use for Joseph after watching him put up some impressive practices and preseason reps for the Chiefs this summer. If it wasn't for the bevy of talent already in-house, it feels like a safe assumption that Joseph could have stuck around in some fashion, but the competition was simply too great.
Joseph proved himself to be a physical tackler while on defense for the Chiefs and forced a fumble on a punt return against the Detroit Lions, showing off his value on special teams. He's a physical force with a nose for the ball who once showed enough upside to be a second-round choice back in 2021 for the Dallas Cowboys.
The unfortunate story, however, is that Joseph only lasted two full seasons with the Cowboys before being dealt to the Miami Dolphins before the 2023 campaign in a preseason swap of two disappointing corners (Dallas received Noah Igbinoghene in the deal). From there, Joseph has been tossed aside by the Fins, the Seahawks, the Chiefs, and now the Colts.
Now that Joseph is available once again, perhaps the Chiefs will offer a spot on their own practice squad. That said, there are already three corners on the PS including Keith Taylor, former 7th round choice Nic Jones, and recent waiver claim Eric Scott, Jr.
