The Washington Commanders went all-in on a couple of former Kansas City Chiefs linemen in recent years to bolster the offensive front. And while neither lineman is guaranteed to be a starter in 2026, the team has committed once again to a longer-term relationship with both.

On Monday, the Commanders announced a two-year contract extension with offensive lineman Nick Allegretti. The move reworks Allegretti's final season on the original three-year, $16 million deal signed before the 2024 season and extends the commitment to 2027. He joins Andrew Wylie as former Chiefs players given a chance to stick in the nation's capital for the long haul.

Allegretti signed with Washington after five seasons with the Chiefs, a run of incredible sustained success that included three championships. His ability to climb the depth chart and become a dependable and versatile substitute along the o-line after being a seventh-round choice in the 2019 NFL Draft was already a notable achievement. But Washington's big-money commitment took things to a new level.

Nick Allegretti and Andrew Wylie keep furthering careers that were already impressive given their starting points.

The Commanders had a vision for Allegretti as a competitor for a starting role, and in Dan Quinn's first season on the sidelines, he was the full-season first-team left guard. Allegretti's rather low ceiling was an obvious area for Washington to upgrade, however, and the Commanders relegated him to backup status once again in 2025. He played in 16 games, but also made four starts, including two at center near the end of the season.

One week before reworking Allegretti's contract, the Commanders also announced a new two-year extension with veteran Andrew Wylie. The stories of Allegretti and Wylie are oddly congruent, with the latter as a former undrafted free agent who ascended the depth chart to become an incredibly valuable versatile starter up front for the Chiefs for five seasons. Wylie was just one year ahead of Allegretti, with a stint in K.C. that ran from 2018-22 before joining the Commanders in free agency.

Both Allegretti and Wylie were impressive finds unearthed by Chiefs general manager Brett Veach who became glue guys in front of Patrick Mahomes. The Commanders have provided an unexpected second home for both, extending narratives that were already longer than anyone could have expected for draft flyers and rookie free agents.
