Former Chiefs offensive lineman Andrew Wylie was already an impressive story as a former undrafted free agent who beat the odds stacked against him with a solid run in Kansas City. But Wylie's story is far from over with the news that he's signed a new contract extension with the Washington Commanders.
Washington signed Wylie to a two-year extension announced on Monday, worth up to $10.5 million, that will keep him with the Commanders through the 2027 campaign. Wylie was set to hit free agency after three seasons in the nation's capital.
The Commanders might not view Wylie as a full-time starter anymore, with 5 starts in 16 games last season, but his days as a versatile stopgap go all the way back to his earliest moments with the Chiefs. Wylie's ability to step in and provide a solid floor at a number of spots across an offensive front have made him a valuable role player and starter for several years.
Andrew Wylie's impressive story continues with a new extension to stay in Washington for the next two seasons.
Wylie went unselected in the 2017 NFL Draft after starring at Eastern Michigan, but he earned a look as a rookie free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. Three franchises would give him a cup of coffee before the Chiefs signed him near the end of 2017 and gave him a long offseason look that would ultimately net him a permanent roster spot for the next five seasons.
The Chiefs would rely on Wylie for a number of roles, from left guard to right guard to right tackle over the years. The Commanders imported that reliability before the 2023 season with a three-year, $24 million deal in free agency. Even after a regime change, Wylie remained a valuable component for the team's offense up front, and now they've committed to another two seasons to keep him around.
To date, Wylie has played in 116 regular season games across 8 NFL seasons, including 93 starts at multiple positions. He was an unearthed gem for general manager Brett Veach in Kansas City who has turned into a steady asset with nearly a decade of experience. The Commanders have now secured some much-needed depth and versatility as they hope to rebound in 2026 with the return of Jayden Daniels from injury.
