Marlen Sewell's tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs was a brief one. It was only a few weeks ago that he impressed the team enough to sign after earning a tryout among undrafted players who warranted a closer look following the 2026 NFL Draft. However, the chance to reunite with L'Jarius Sneed proved too great a temptation for K.C., and a move had to be made to clear a roster spot.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs placed Sewell on waivers, per the NFL's transaction wire, which means he's there for another team to potentially claim before hitting free agency once again.

Sneed officially joined the Chiefs for his second run with the team to start the team's week of mandatory minicamp. On Monday, players arrive for medical checks, media headshots, and the like. On Tuesday, those same players begin three days of workouts totaling 24 hours before finally going home for the ultimate break before training camp in July.

Marlen Sewell was waived by the Chiefs after a short stint following a successful tryout at rookie minicamp.

The Chiefs brought in Sneed for a visit and apparently liked what they saw in his medical checks enough to bring him back after two injury-plagued years with the Tennessee Titans. Sneed appeared in only 12 games with minimal impact in 2024-25 while dealing with knee and quad injuries, a frustrating return on the Titans' investment of a third-round pick and a four-year, $76 million contract extension.

Sewell spent five years at Vanderbilt and appeared in 45 games for the Commodores with 101 career tackles, 3 passes defended, and 1 forced fumble. He was mostly a special teams contributor and rotational corner in his first two seasons before earning his first starts as a junior in 2024. He would go on to earn captain status for Vanderbilt in his final season.

While Sewell didn't warrant a draft selection in late April, the Chiefs brought him in for a tryout and announced his signing following rookie minicamp along with two other prospects: Missouri wide receiver Xavier Loyd and Indiana offensive lineman Kahlil Benson.

Sneed's arrival provides a veteran presence for an inexperienced cornerbacks room that's been completely rebuilt following significant offseason losses. Sewell was hoping the turnover would create an opportunity for him, but he was cut before mandatory minicamp. Perhaps an injury could bring Sewell back in for a closer look once training camp rolls around.
