The Kansas City Chiefs are on the quest for the NFL's first-ever Super Bowl three-peat. While there have been teams who have gone back-to-back (the Chiefs included, of course), no one has been able to capture that elusive three-peat.
Chiefs fans might not feel great about the team's chances despite their 13-1 record simply because nearly every game this season has come down to the wire. Is this team ready for a grueling January and (hopefully) February despite having to fight tooth and nail to lock down every win in the final seconds?
Well, if history is any indicator, then yes. Yes, they are.
The Chiefs' record in December alone is enough reason to feel confident that this team knows what it's doing. Since Patrick Mahomes took over as Kansas City's starting quarterback in 2018, the Chiefs are an impressive 21-6 in the month of December and funny enough, three of their six losses in December came during the 2023 season.
Chiefs have been dominant in December since Patrick Mahomes took over
If you'll remember, December was not kind to the Chiefs last year, as they dropped winnable games to the Packers, Bills, and Raiders. The loss to the Raiders on Christmas Day was when a lot of people were officially counting K.C. out as a Super Bowl contender and no one blamed them. Their offense looked horrid.
Well, as we saw, once the playoffs started up, the same ol' Chiefs that we all know and love but everyone else in the NFL hates showed up and did something they hadn't before. Mahomes finally had to play postseason games on the road and guess what? He went 2-0 against the Bills and the Ravens in their home stadiums. Not bad.
It's easy for Chiefs fans to see the team struggling to put opponents away each week and think they don't have what it takes to three-peat, but their record in December alone shows why this team is a threat every year. They know how to win late in the year when it matters most.
And hey, even in the one December when they struggled, they still found a way to win the whole dang thing a little over a month later. So just relax, Chiefs fans. What happens during the regular-season is just a trial run for the postseason and hopefully the Super Bowl.
