The hype for the 2027 class is real, and Kansas City should benefit in several Chiefs-specific ways.

After an exciting weekend that was filled with twists, turns, and loads of excitement, the 2026 NFL draft process has finally come to a close. The Kansas City Chiefs made seven draft picks as they look to retool their roster and return to the Super Bowl yet again this season. Now, for NFL draft analysts like me, our focus shifts to next year's class, one that looks much more exciting than 2026.

Throughout the 2026 draft process, the talk of the town was how weak the draft class was at the top and the lack of top-tier prospects available. On the other hand, excitement about the 2027 draft class continued to brew, as many 2026 prospects returned to school, while top underclassmen continued to shine as some of the top players in college football.

Many fans argued that the hype around the 2027 class was not realistic and that it would end up just like the 2026 class, with many top prospects returning in a hunt for NIL money. But I am here to tell you that is not the case, and the hype around the 2027 draft is very real. There is an incredible amount of talent for 2027, and the Chiefs appear to be in a prime position to reap the rewards.

An incredible WR class

The wide receiver class for 2027 is loaded with talent from top to bottom, something the Chiefs will greatly benefit from next offseason. At the top of the class is a superstar, and easily the best WR prospect I have ever watched, Jeremiah Smith. While he likely will not be available for Kansas City, other top prospects like Cam Coleman, TJ Moore, Nick Marsh, Nyck Harbor, and Ryan Wingo all likely would have been first-round picks if available this year.

There are even more prospects who may fall further down the list that have not gotten a lot of attention but will be strong NFL players. The 2027 class is just as strong with its depth as it is at the top, and the Chiefs will have plenty of opportunity to add a top pass catcher next offseason. With Rashee Rice in the last year of his deal, and the Chiefs already lacking a strong WR room, the 2027 pass catchers will be very appealing.

A strong QB class helps Kansas City more than you think

When you first see this, you may wonder what a strong QB class has to do with the team that has the best quarterback in the NFL. But for the Chiefs, who hope to be picking closer to the bottom of the first round in this year's class, the more first-round quarterbacks in a draft class, the better.

More top QB prospects are good news for Kansas City, as the higher they are taken, the more top prospects that fall down the board. Top pass catchers will likely be the priority, with several great tight ends as well, but the defensive line class is just as strong and could help boost the Chiefs' defense even more.

It likely would have helped the Chiefs this year if guys like Arch Manning, Dante Moore, or Brendan Sorsby declared for the 2026 class, but now they are all eligible for the 2027 draft. With other top QBs like CJ Carr, CJ Bailey, and Julian Sayin, we may see several top prospects selected in the first round. The more of these players in the draft, the more possible it becomes that the Chiefs can add a cornerstone prospect to extend their dynasty for years to come.

Depth on Depth on Depth

The 2027 class is strong from top to bottom, especially at positions where the Chiefs will be looking for depth next offseason. There are a multitude of defensive end prospects that will become strong NFL players, and the depth in the DB room is strong as well. The Chiefs' biggest positions of need are where this draft is the strongest, and the Chiefs' treasure trove of Day 3 draft picks will serve them nicely next year.

This depth gives Kansas City the ability to make some tough salary-cap decisions while still being confident they can find key contributors late in the draft. The Chiefs are slated to hold four top-100 picks as well as (likely) seven picks on Day 3, including their comp picks from free agency. Kansas City is in a great spot to add some high-level talent in next year's draft.

Summary

The hype around the 2027 draft is real, and this class is flooded with talent from top to bottom that will help bolster an NFL roster. While we are 365 days from the next NFL draft, the Chiefs' front office has already started preparing and is in a great spot to make the most of it. It is easy to say that 2027 will be just like the last two draft classes, but I can assure you that is not the case, and the Chiefs are in a prime position to come away with one of the best hauls in the NFL next year.
