Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to making history, and he's primed for some more in 2026.

Given everything he's accomplished during his career, which now includes the first half-billion-dollar contract in NFL history, it's often easy to forget that Patrick Mahomes hasn't even been in the league for a decade yet, as he was taken with the 10th overall pick in the opening round of the 2017 draft.

And let's not forget that he sat behind Alex Smith as a rookie, appearing in just one game before taking over the QB1 role in 2018, winning the first of his two regular-season MVPs after putting up video-game numbers with 5,097 yards and 50 touchdown passes.

In the years since, Mahomes has set an absurd amount of NFL history, including becoming the fastest to 10,000 career passing yards (34 games), 20,000 career passing yards (67 games), 30,000 career passing yards (103 games), 100 career passing touchdowns (40 games), 200 career passing touchdowns (84 games), and 250 career passing touchdowns (116 games).

And this upcoming 2026 season could bring some more history. Now with 35,939 passing yards and 267 touchdown passes to his name, the three-time Super Bowl champ already owns the Chiefs' franchise records in both categories.

And while he's obviously still got a long way to go to catch the all-time league leader on both lists, Tom Brady, who threw for 89,214 yards and 649 touchdowns during his 23-year career, Mahomes is rapidly climbing up those leaderboards and could soon hit some significant milestones.

Patrick Mahomes is on the cusp of entering the NFL's all-time top 25 in passing yards and the top 15 in TD passes

With his 35,939 passing yards, Mahomes currently finds himself in the No. 33 slot on the all-time list. Now, we won't give you the entire list, but we will go ahead and include everyone that Mahomes is within 5,000 yards of heading into the 2026 season.

  • 23. Kerry Collins: 40,922
  • 24. Joe Montana: 40,551
  • 25. Johnny Unitas: 40,239
  • 26. Andy Dalton: 39,793
  • 27. Jared Goff: 39,622
  • 28. Dave Krieg: 38,147
  • 29. Boomer Esiason: 37,920
  • 30. Donovan McNabb: 37,276
  • 31. Matt Hasselbeck: 36,638
  • 32. Dak Prescott: 35,989
  • 33. Patrick Mahomes: 35,939

As you can see, if Mahomes can manage to hit the 5,000-yard mark for the third time in his career, he'll surpass Kerry Collins, who currently holds the No. 23 position. And to get into the top 25 this year, he might have to do just that, as both Dak Prescott and Jared Goff are on this list as well.

As far as touchdown passes are concerned, Mahomes' 267 are good for 22nd on the all-time list. And simple math tells us that he only needs 33 to join the 300 club, which is a highly exclusive group that currently includes just 14 players.

Again, we won't run down the entire list, and seeing as how Mahomes is in no way, shape, or form reaching Fran Tarkenton and his 342 in the No. 13 position, we'll start at No. 14 with longtime Kansas City nemesis John Elway.

  • 14. John Elway: 300
  • 15. Kirk Cousins: 298
  • 16. Carson Palmer: 294
  • 17. Warren Moon: 291
  • 18. Johnny Unitas: 290
  • 19. Vinny Testaverde: 275
  • 20. Joe Montana: 273
  • 21. Joe Flacco: 272
  • 22. Patrick Mahomes: 267

Assuming Kirk Cousins gets at least a few starts with the Las Vegas Raiders before the team hands the reins to No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, he'll surpass Elway first, as he obviously needs just two to tie and three to take over that 14th slot.

But if Mahomes can get to 34, which he has four times in his career (but not since 2022), he can take sole possession of 15th. And if not, we at least know that the top 20 is guaranteed, as he only needs seven to surpass the great Joe Montana, who tossed 29 TDs for the Chiefs after throwing 244 for the San Francisco 49ers.

Now, Mahomes hitting these historic marks will obviously be affected by his ongoing recovery from the ACL and LCL tears he suffered this past December. But as everything seems to be going smoothly in that regard, all signs are pointing to him being ready to roll come Week 1 when Kansas City hosts the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
