Chiefs predicted to lose Matt Nagy to another AFC team as head coach for 2025
The Kansas City Chiefs might lose their offensive coordinator over the offseason, or at least that's what Brian Costello of The New York Post predicted will happen. Costello not only thinks that Nagy will no longer be in K.C. after the 2024 season but he thinks it'll be the New York Jets who hire him as their next head coach.
It wouldn't be Nagy's first crack at being a head coach. After serving as a co-offensive coordinator with Brad Childress in 2016, Nagy was the Chiefs solo offensive coordinator in 2017 and did a good enough job that the Chicago Bears hired him as their next head coach.
Nagy spent four years in that role for Chicago before he was fired following the conclusion of the 2021 season. The Bears went a disappointing 6-11 that year, which was his only losing record as the Bears head coach but the team had gone 8-8 in 2019 and 2020. Overall, Nagy finished with a 34-31 coaching record but he was heavily criticized throughout his Bears tenure.
Nagy returned to Kansas City after he was fired and in 2023 and reclaimed his offensive coordinator position. Costello had a few other options to land the Jets' head coach position in 2025 but he ultimately settled on Nagy.
Matt Nagy linked to vacant NY Jets coaching job in 2025
Chiefs fans have mixed opinions on Nagy in his current role. On the one hand, Nagy seems to be the scapegoat for the offense's issues. Whenever the offense does well, Andy Reid gets the credit. When the offense isn't doing well, fans want Nagy run out of town.
As for the Jets, fans are not loving the Nagy to New York rumors with Justin Fried of The Jet Press going so far as comparing Nagy to former Jets and Dolphins head coach Adam Gase. Fried noted, "Much like Gase, Nagy has made a career out of riding the coattails of others. The New Jersey native broke into the NFL as a coach due to a personal connection with then-Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid."
If Nagy was hired by the Jets, the Chiefs would search for its third offensive coordinator in four years after having Eric Bieniemy running the offense for half a decade.
