The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to bring back Matt Nagy on staff as quarterbacks coach.

Per Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Nagy will return to join Andy Reid‘s staff once again after being let go by the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason. Adam Schefter, NFL reporter, also adds that Nagy’s title will include the “Senior Assistant” title in addition to his work positionally with quarterbacks.

Nagy should need no introduction for Chiefs Kingdom after spending time with the team during Andy Reid’s first few seasons in Kansas City. He climbed the ranks from being the team’s quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator following the departure of Doug Pederson to be head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016.

The Kansas City Chiefs have welcomed back Matt Nagy to the coaching staff.

From there, Nagy spent two seasons on the sidelines at the coordinator level for the Chiefs as offensive coordinator before earning the chance to call plays on his own for the Bears beginning in 2018. Unfortunately the Bears fired Nagy even after he’d earned an NFL Coach of the Year award in his first season and put together a 34-31 overall record in the Windy City.

The reunion of Nagy and the Chiefs has been a well-telegraphed move for most of the offseason—not that any source had factual information concerning a homecoming. Rather, it simply made so much sense if Nagy wanted to stay in the game for the next season while simultaneously surveying his future.

For the Chiefs, Nagy fills the void created by Mike Kafka‘s departure to the New York Giants to serve as the offensive coordinator under new head coach Brian Daboll. He’ll be working with Patrick Mahomes for the first time as a starting quarterback and will partner with Eric Bieniemy and Reid to craft the team’s offensive strategy going forward. Earlier this week, it was also learned that Bieniemy would be returning to the Chiefs’ sidelines.

Nagy first joined Andy Reid’s staff back with the Philadelphia Eagles as a coaching intern in 2008.
