Shortly before a holiday weekend and with just over one week to go before they open the season at home against the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs invited several players to Arrowhead Stadium for a group tryout of names that could help on both sides of the ball.
In total, the Chiefs saw 10 free agents working out for the team hoping to earn a contract. Seven of those were on the offensive side with a particular emphasis on tight ends and receivers with return experience. Special teams is the calling card for everyone involved.
Here's a closer look at who came to K.C. on Friday for a tryout.
Rivaldo Fairweather, TE
Fairweather is not a great name for the back of a jersey, but he's also a 6-4, 252-pound tight end who was just waived by the Arizona Cardinals before roster cuts were due. He caught on with the Dallas Cowboys before that, after finishing his collegiate career at Auburn. Caught 13 passes for 128 yards this preseason in a solid showing.
Xavier Gipson, WR
Gipson might be the most recognizable name on this list for Chiefs fans who've paid attention to East Coast teams. Gipson has played in 41 games since 2023, mostly with the New York Jets. However, he's also earned stints with the Giants and Eagles. He was just released by the Giants after a second stint. Another player in the mix here with extensive return experience.
Cody Hardy, TE
Hardy is a big blocker at tight end, weighing just over 270 lbs. and standing 6-5 out of N.C. State. He signed with the Saints after the draft but failed to catch onto the active roster and is looking for work.
Tre' McKitty, TE
McKitty is another recognizable name from the lot. A former third-round choice of the Chargers in 2021, he flamed out of the NFL pretty quickly with only 16 career catches for 117 yards in three seasons in SoCal before bouncing around practice squads and offseason rosters. He spent the spring in the UFL before the Commanders asked him to hang out for the preseason.
Tyler Moore, TE
Some of the players on this list have played for multiple teams, but few have blitzed through the options like Tyler Moore. A rookie free agent out of Iowa State, he's earned cups of coffee with the Colts, Giants, and Panthers and even tried out for the Seahawks as well. Now the Chiefs are taking a closer look at the 6-5, 255 lb. TE.
Thomas Odukoya, TE
Odukoya is an intriguing name as a former International Pathways Player (from Amsterdam) with the Titans. He caught on in Nashville in 2022, played his only 2 games in 2024, and spent part of last season on the Patriots' practice squad. He earned another tryout for Mike Vrabel this summer, but nothing panned out.
Cam Ross, WR
Cam Ross's visit was reported earlier this week, perhaps notable because he spent his summer with the Broncos, but the Chiefs have real reason for interest. Ross averaged 44 catches for 512 yards in each of the last three seasons, even as he transferred from UConn to James Madison to Virginia. He has one return TD in each of the last two seasons as well.
Jay Toia, DT
Big nose tackle who came to the NFL with several years of starting experience with UCLA before the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the seventh round of the 2025 draft. Played in five games but was cut this preseason and left to search for a new team. The Chiefs swapped out Cole Brevard with Marcus Harris earlier this week, but Toia could be another name to keep on hand in case depth is shaken.
Larry Worth III, DB
Worth played linebacker and safety, so he brings versatility to the next level with an exciting athletic profile to boot. Signed with the 49ers after going undrafted. Strong tackler who would be an obvious special teams asset.
Taurean York, LB
A lot of analysts were surprised when York went undrafted after such a strong career at Texas A&M. The athletic limitations are there, but his leadership, strength, and instincts are all assets that no one should bet against. Chiefs would do well to find a way to sign him to the practice squad.
