The Kansas City Chiefs made a massive splash in free agency, signing Super Bowl 60 MVP Kenneth Walker. In doing so, the Chiefs revamped their running back room in a big way and now K.C. will have something on its offense that it hasn't in quite some time -- a dominant running back to help out Patrick Mahomes.

Chiefs fans were elated to see Brett Veach finally address the rushing attack in a big way. This is a good fit for both Walker and Kansas City, which is exactly what James Reber, an Next Gen Stats Research Analyst, wrote about on NFL.com. Reber discussed who he thought were the perfect player-team pairings from the first wave of free agency and had the Chiefs and Walker at the top of his list.

"Walker's decision to join the Chiefs projects as a spectacular move for both player and team. The MVP of Super Bowl LX will benefit from Kansas City's upper-echelon blocking; in 2025, the Chiefs' offensive line propelled the team's rushers to a 43.6% success rate (seventh-highest in the NFL). And K.C. achieved that despite being in desperate need of more dynamism from its running back room. Chiefs RBs have produced explosive runs of 10-plus yards at the lowest rate in the league in consecutive seasons (4.7% in 2024, 6.5% in 2025). Walker, on the other hand, generated explosive runs on 14.9% of his carries this past season, the second-highest rate among running backs with 150-plus attempts. His top career speed of 22.09 MPH is faster than any mark hit by a Chiefs back on a scrimmage play since at least 2016."

Kenneth Walker signing already looks perfect for Chiefs

It says a lot that the Chiefs offensive line was good at run-blocking yet K.C's running backs were still underperforming. It tells you everything you need to know about that position last year. Walker is hopefully going to change things there.

Mahomes has not had a running back like Walker during the course of his career and it was critical for Veach to give him a weapon like this. Mahomes tore his ACL near the end of the 2025 regular season and now will be returning from that injury in 2026. Having a running back that can bail him out of situations and also take the load off of him is going to be huge for Mahomes as he enters a new phase of his career.

Simply put, the Chiefs needed some oomph in their backfield and they addressed that need in the biggest way possible with the addition of Walker. He'll benefit from a great run-blocking o-line while the Chiefs will benefit from what Walker offers as a runner. Win-win for both sides.
