Chiefs injury update: Latest news on Hollywood Brown, DJ Humphries and more
By Matt Conner
Let's survey everything we know about the latest Chiefs who are ailing or returning to the roster.
The Kansas City Chiefs training staff has been very, very busy season. .
While the Chiefs have enjoyed a banner season in the standings with a 12-1 record and some distance between them and any competitors at all in the race for the top seed in the conference, one look at the team's injury reports from week to week would have you assumes fd otherwise. In fact, it's amazing the Chiefs have stayed as competitive as they have in the wake of so many health concerns.
Fortunately some of those players lost are coming back to the active roster right as the playoffs are coming into view. Here's a rundown of what we know about multiple players heading into Week 15, a road trip to play the Cleveland Browns.
D.J. Humphries
At this point, the Chiefs are likely to declare D.J. Humphries out ahead of their scheduled game against the Browns on Sunday. That's because the veteran tackle has missed every single practice this week.
On Friday, Humphries was there to support his teammates but he was walking around without a helmet on, making it clear he wasn't going to be taking part in any practice sessions or drills.
Humphries signed with the Chiefs in mid-November and landed a spot starting on the left side after watching the likes of Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia struggle to protect Patrick Mahomes' blindside. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury surfaced and knocked him out for part of his debut.
It's possible he could still surprise and play on Sunday, but it's looking more and more like he'll miss his Week 15—hopefully to get healthy for the rest of the year.
Harrison Butker
The team's long-term kicker has missed the last four games after undergoing surgery on the meniscus in his left knee. Now Butker looks ready to potentially return as he's been listed as a limited participant in practice—although the Chiefs might be wise to slow play things.
For now, the Chiefs have Matthew Wright as their interim kicker and he scored all four field goal attempts a week ago in a close 19-17 win over the Charges (including the game-winner as time expired). Wright should be fine against the Browns if the Chiefs want to make sure Butiker is good and not stress things at all.
Hollywood Brown
The Chiefs officially opened the 21-day window for Hollywood Brown to return for the first time from IR since suffering a sternoclavicular injury on his first catch of the preseason against the Jaguars in early August.
While this year hasn't gone as hoped, the idea of adding a playmaker like Brown, who had obvious chemistry with Patrick Mahomes, down the stretch like this could be a major bonus for a team that's also added JuJu Smith-Schuster and DeAndre Hopkins while watching Xavier Worthy take major steps forward.
The Chiefs offense hasn't really clicked all season, but if there's ever a moment for them to come alive, it's the postseason.
Jawaan Taylor
The Chiefs' right tackle landed on the injury report earlier this week when he was limited on Wednesday with a knee issue. Given that Humphries was also out on Wednesday, the flares went out in Chiefs Kingdom that things could get ugly into Week 15.
Fortunately, the team has been practicing with Taylor in full so the mid-season scare doesn't look like it will affect much on Sunday. The Browns are tough in the trenches and things are going to be hard enough for K.C. going into Cleveland. Right tackle should be okay but it's worth keeping an eye on the situation going into the weekend.
